Membership benefits

The Society for Archaeological Sciences is a professional society for those studying and working in physical and natural science applications in archaeology, paleoanthropology, and art conservation, and for anyone who supports research in those fields. By joining, you can benefit from our geographically and intellectually diverse network of members and support the international infrastructure that SAS provides for interdisciplinary research and communication in heritage science.

Our goals are to:

  • establish forums for the discussion of current issues in archaeological science;
  • inform archaeologists, anthropologists, and other professionals about the potential application of techniques adopted from the physical and natural sciences;
  • encourage research, presentation, and publication on archaeological science topics;
  • cooperate with other archaeological, anthropological, and archaeometric associations and societies to further our common interests.

We can best accomplish these goals with the membership and active involvement of professionals, students, and interested citizens. See our 2023 membership benefits poster or the next page for more details.  To join SAS today, complete the member information form and pay your dues below.

Specific benefits

NETWORK WITH THE RIGHT PROFESSIONALS

SAS positions itself as the indispensable co-sponsor of multiple partner programming events each year. In 2022 alone, the society co-sponsored ten conferences in seven countries on three continents. For 2023, SAS will co-sponsor the Unravelling the Paleolithic conference in the UK, the GMPCA Archaeometry 2023 congress in France, the International Obsidian Conference in Japan, and additional events currently under negotiation. SAS will also organize and/or sponsor sessions at The Great Scientific Exchange (SciX) and the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Annual Meeting.

ADVANCE YOUR RESEARCH

Members are eligible for the Student and Early Career Researcher Research Support Award (up to US $500 per award in 2022). This program supports a range of travel and laboratory expenses and is reevaluated regularly to meet the needs of our members.

GET RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE

Student poster awards (up to US $200) at the SAA, ISA, and other partner conferences. In addition to a monetary prize, poster awards typically include a complimentary SAS membership for one year, social media promotion of the winning poster, and publication of an extended abstract in the SAS Bulletin. SAS also seeks to recognize excellence in research by young professionals with the SAS and Journal of Archaeological Science Emerging Investigator Award. The winning article will be given free access for one year in JAS and the lead author will be awarded US $500.

ACCESS VALUABLE INFORMATION

Free access to the SAS-sponsored Encyclopedia of Archaeological Sciences (a US $875 value) and discounted rates for journal subscriptions (Journal of Archaeological Science, Archaeometry, and Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences).

KEEP UPDATED

The latest archaeological science news is published in The SAS Bulletin Online as articles become available. These original pieces are summarized in quarterly PDF digests that are available to members only. The bulletin contains features on thematic areas overseen by an associate editor, guest articles from recent SAS award winners about their research, summaries of recent SAS-sponsored events, and notifications about new society programs and leadership opportunities.

CONNECT TO THE WORLD

SAS provides multiple social media channels, including a Facebook Page and Group, Twitter, LinkedIn Page, and YouTube channel. All SAS members can leverage our social media channels to showcase their latest publication for an engaged international audience through the SAS Spotlight social media program. Members can also hone their communication skills as an SAS social media volunteer while shaping how the society reaches new audiences.

BECOME A LEADER FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

The SAS Student Ambassador program offers students the opportunity to plan and carry out events, promote the archaeological sciences, and build their CVs. Student and early career members of the society are also who the Executive Board looks to first when seeking invited speakers and session chairs for partner conferences.
