The Journal of Archaeological Science (JAS) and the Society for Archaeological Sciences (SAS) are pleased to announce a special prize to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the SAS in 1977. The prize will be given to the best article published by an SAS member in the JAS in 2026. The eligibility criteria to be nominated for the prize are as follows: 

  1. Adhering to the SAS membership regulations, the first author must be a current member of the SAS as of the 31st of December 2026. Members of any category (student, regular, retired, or lifetime) are eligible. 
  2. The article must be published between the 1st of January 2026 and the 31st of December 2026. 

The award includes a $500 USD cash prize, one year of free membership in the SAS for the first author, promotion of the article through various JAS and SAS media channels, and one year of free-to-read promotional access for the winning article. The award evaluation committee will consist of members of the SAS Executive Board and JAS Editorial Board. In January of 2027, the award committee will announce a call for nominations through direct e-mails to all persons included in the final 2026 SAS member list, which shall serve as the nominating body.  Both nominations of others and self-nominations will be accepted.  In the case of nomination of someone other than yourself, it is the nominator’s responsibility to determine if the nominee is eligible.

Each nominated article with an eligible author will be evaluated according to the following two criteria:

  1. Innovativeness and originality of the research
  2. Impact or potential impact on the field of archaeological scienceI
