The SAS was founded in 1977 as part of a broad effort to get archaeological science to function more effectively by supporting communication among researchers and graduate student training. Read about the first 40 years of SAS in this essay by Rob Sternberg.
The Society holds annual competitions for awards, including the Student and ECR Research Support Award, the R. E. Taylor Award for archaeometry posters, the Charles C. Kolb Award for a publication on archaeological ceramics, and the JAS Emerging Investigator Award. All archaeologists are warmly welcome to submit work for consideration!
Did you know that SAS is a registered 501(c)(6) tax-exempt non-profit organization? You can help us in our mission by making a tax-deductible donation. A gift to SAS means that you directly support student scientists and outstanding young researchers to launch their careers.
