The SAS regularly sponsors conferences, workshops, and conference sessions. If you're planning an event on any topic relevant to the goals of the society, please get in touch with the VP of Intersociety Relations so that we can explore partnering with you and your organization.

History of the Society

The SAS was founded in 1977 as part of a broad effort to get archaeological science to function more effectively by supporting communication among researchers and graduate student training.  Read about the first 40 years of SAS in this 2019 essay by Rob Sternberg, former SAS President, Secretary-Treasurer, Bulletin Editor, and General Secretary Emeritus.

Awards

The Society holds competitions in two categories: 1) prizes that honor outstanding research and 2) awards that support the work of early career researchers. These include the Student and ECR Research Support Award, the R. E. Taylor Award for student conference posters, the Charles C. Kolb Award for best publication on archaeological ceramics, and the JAS Emerging Investigator Award.  In 2025, we're introducing new award programs in partnership with Beta Analytic and Eurofins EAG Laboratories.
