Dear colleagues,
Please allow us to remind you that the deadline for abstract submission fo=
r the 2010
General Assembly of EGU is 18 January 2010.
We would like to invite you to participate to the session " Environmental=
hazards
and Ancient Societies: Lessons from the past?" (NH9.14) at the General
Assembly 2010 of the European Geosciences Union, taking place in Vienna
(Austria), from 2 to 7 May 2010. The session is convened by M. Sintubin, K=
.-G.
Hinzen, A. M. Michetti, M.A. Rodriguez-Pascua and I.S. Stewart, and is a j=
oined
initiative of the INQUA Focus Area Paleoseismology and Active Tectonicsand=

IGCP567 Earhtquake Archaeology.

INQUA Project #0811 GRANTS

Grants for partially supporting the participation of post-graduate student=
s, young
scientists, and scientists from low GDP countries will be available from t=
he INQUA
Project #0811. Please send the application to the INQUA Project #0811 Scie=
ntific
Secretary (inquascale@apat.it), Abstract, CV, a Brief letter of motivation=
, and (for
young scientist/students) a Recommendation letter.
The applications will be considered only if the applicant has
- submitted on-line the abstract before Jan. 18, 2010, through the EGU 201=
0 web
page;
- sent the documentation requested above in an unique pdf document before
January 31st, 2010
Applicants should pay the regular registration fee; the grants will be tra=
nsferred cash
onsite to the selected participants. We will inform on the decision as soo=
n as
possible. After the Dead Sea Rift and the Baelo Claudia workshops in 2009,=
this will
be the first event in 2010 for the INQUA Project #0811 - A Global Catalogu=
e and
Mapping of Earthquake Environmental Effects - and a Business Meeting for t=
he
Project will also take place during the EGU; details will be announced lat=
er in March
2010.

Please check the official website of EGU 2010for all extra information.

If you have any questions with respect to our session, please feel free to=
contact us
(see http://ees.kuleuven.be/igcp567/activities/egu2010/).

Season's Greetings,
Manuel, Klaus, Alessandro, Miguel and Iain

Environmental hazards and Ancient Societies: Lessons from the past?
Modern societies are increasingly confronted with natural hazards, such as=

earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and rockfalls, tsunamis, and e=
xtreme
meteorological events. Assessing these hazards is of paramount importance =
to
mitigate the risk. Instrumental records of such events cover only a short =
time span
and expanding the time window of observation beyond instrumental times is
essential to lower the uncertainties in hazard assessments. While historic=
al studies
allow a certain extension of the time window, the integration of geologica=
l,
geomorphological, and archaeological records gives access to much longer t=
ime
periods. Such an approach not only aims at identifying and parameterizing =
=93 often-
unknown - palaeo-events, but also at learning how ancient societies coped =
with
these hazards.
In the past decade such a multidisciplinary approach to earthquake hazard =
was
successful. The INQUA Environmental Seismic Intensity Scale (ESI2007), usi=
ng
earthquake effects in the natural environment to parameterize strong seism=
ic events
in the past, illustrates this.
The aim of this session is to broaden the scope to the archaeological envi=
ronment
and to other natural hazards. We therefore welcome submissions concerning =
the
identification, parameterization and modeling of ancient events at and aro=
und
archaeological sites, not only in the perspective of hazard assessment and=
future risk
mitigation but also to learn more about the reaction of ancient societies =
to these
palaeo-events. We encourage contributions from both natural, Engineering a=
nd
social sciences to stimulate interdisciplinary discussions on the lessons =
to be learned
from the past.
