Post-doctoral research position in micropalaeontology/palaeoceanography

The Black Sea environmental conditions during the Meso-and Neolithic period=
s

The Department of Geography seeks to appoint a PDRA as a micropalaeontologi=
st/palaeoceanographer specialist to work on a Leverhulme Trust-funded proje=
ct to assess the timing and the amplitude of the reconnection of the Black =
Sea with the Mediterranean Sea during the Early Holocene. The post is for 3=
years and will start on the 1st of August 2009.
The main aim of this project is to seek a better understanding and the reco=
nstruction of water conditions at the time of the early reconnection of the=
Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, based on a multi-proxy approach; sea-s=
urface conditions will be traced with organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts, =
and bottom conditions will be assessed from ostracod assemblages. In parall=
el, a laboratory experiment will be undertaken to culture dinoflagellate sp=
ecies to link morphotypes with a range of salinities and temperatures. The =
specific aims of this proposal are threefold: 1) to develop a methodology, =
based on recent phytoplanktonic and benthonic microfossil assemblages and l=
aboratory experiment, for establishing a transfer function to reconstruct p=
ast salinity; 2) to apply that methodology to the phytoplanktonic and benth=
ic microfossil content of two sediment sequences covering the last 10,000 y=
ears; and 3) to produce high resolution records enabling assessment of the =
timing and magnitude of the reconnection of the Black Sea with the Mediterr=
anean Sea and to quantify the salinity of the Black Sea before and after it=
s reconnection with the Mediterranean Sea.
The work will involve a close collaboration with colleagues from the School=
of Biological Sciences (UoL) (David Montagnes) and Department of Geography=
, Queen Mary University of London (David Horne).
The applicant will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) and should have a =
background in micropalaeontology and palaeoceanography. Some knowledge of c=
ulturing phytoplankton will be beneficial. Finally, the person who fills th=
e post will be expected to conduct the research, assist coordination of the=
project, and undertake the role as primary author for peer reviewed papers=
arising from the project.
Closing date is 22nd April. For interviews as well as the project detail, c=
ontact Dr Fabienne Marret (f.marret@liv.ac.uk<mailto:f.marret@liv.ac.uk>), =
