Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the following session at the 11th
International Paleolimnology Symposium to be held 23-26 June 2009 in
Guadalajara, Mexico: Rapid events and human answer as reconstructed from
lacustrine archives, session 12.
=20
(sponsored by INQUA TERPRO focus area on hazards and humans=B2)
=20

Rapid environmental changes damaging our lives need to be understood in
order to better mitigate their effects. Lakes often contain excellent
sedimentary records that can be studied at a time resolution sufficiently
high to detect events lasting as little as a few years or even that are
instantaneous. This session will aim at fostering techniques of detection o=
f
rapid changes caused by climatic changes (hurricanes, droughts), geohazards
(earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods) and humans (global warming,
pollution), and at understanding event recurrence times and mechanisms.
Societies (past and modern) may suffer from an accumulation of hazards from
which they have increasing difficulties to recover (ratchet effect), and in
some cases this may lead to collapse (the strap breaks).

Abstracts will be accepted until 20 May, but please note that early
registration ends 20 March (i.e., at the end of this week!).
For further details on the conference, see
