    Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to the Floodplain Lake sediments as
archives for environmental history session at the 11th International
Paleolimnology Symposium, to be held 23-26th June 2009 in
    Guadalajara, Mexico ( http://www.geofisica.unam.mx/paleolimnologia/).

    14. Floodplain Lake sediments as archives for environmental history

There is tremendous diversity in the structure and function of
floodplain ecosystems across the many regions of the world. Floodplain
lakes are natural basins located proximal to rivers and thus become
archives for the distinct pulses of allochthonous biological assemblages
and sediment brought in during flooding. Floodplain lakes are often the
only lakes existing in non-glaciated terrain, and are therefore of
significant interest for reconstructing paleorecords of environmental
change in these regions. These lakes present different challenges, but
have tremendous potential for preserving long term records of hydrologic
and geomorphic alterations, agricultural practices, and changes in water
quality and availability in their sediments. We seek presentations that
explore a fundamental understanding of the role of climate change as
well as agricultural and industrial activities in shaping floodplain
lake dynamics. The session will highlight work aimed at
paleolimnological studies using biotic and/or abiotic proxy records from
floodplain lake sediments to characterize floodplain ecosystem development.

In order to have a session on this emerging field we need six oral
presentations. It would be great if you would decide to share your data
in this session. Do not hesitate to contact us.
