Subject: request on Fagopyrum in europe
To: QUATERNARY@CLIFFY.UCS.MUN.CA

--apologies for cross-posting

Dear colleagues,

Cultivation of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) in Europe was first mentio=
ned in archive sources in the 1390-ies. The species was assumed to have be=
en imported from the Middle East, and it became widely accepted among scie=
ntists in vegetation history that buckwheat did not occur in Europe prior =
to ca. AD 1400.=20
=20
Nevertheless, many records exist from Europe that include pollen attributa=
ble to Fagopyrum in time-frames conspicuously earlier than the Late Mediev=
al (cf. attached Table). This implies that the genus might already have be=
en present considerably earlier than generally assumed.

Since these early occurrences never have been discussed systematically, we=
 now are preparing a review on the subject. We aim to:
- make an inventory of the available observations prior to the late Mediev=
al;
- evaluate all these records, i.e. to what extent are these observations r=
eliable, and to what extent errors (e.g. contamination) might have been in=
volved;
- reconstruct the immigration patterns of buckwheat in Europe;
- determine whether (and to what extent) buckwheat was cultivated, or whet=
her it occurred spontaneously (cf. the wild form Fagopyrum tataricum).
=20
We would greatly appreciate your assistance: do you know/have further reco=
rds of early pollen or macrofossil findings attributable to Fagopyrum=3F We =
are not only looking for published sources, but also welcome =93personal com=
munications=94 on unpublished observations. We assume that in many cases =96 s=
ince it was trivial for the relevant study =96 pollen of buckwheat was omitt=
ed from publication, especially when pollen diagrams with only selected po=
llen types were presented.

Looking forward to your response,
