The State of Vermont's commemoration of the European Discovery of Lake Champlain includes two scholarly conferences to assess the state of knowledge concerning this important historical event. One of these focuses on the cultural and ecological state of the basin during the decades surrounding Champlain's voyage to the lake in the summer of 1609.

The Vermont Quadricentennial Native Advisory Panel is seeking presentations by Native and Euroamerican scholars, activists and elders regarding the Champlain Basin's little known 16th and 17th century initial Contact Period for its upcoming conference. We are interested in primary research, as well as how this period can be portrayed to the public. Important themes include ecological baselines and processes such as the region's flora, fauna and climate and their interrelations, as well as anthropological/ethnohistoral issues such as the spread of human pathogens, the nature and identity of the 16th century Champlain Basin's inhabitants, Haudenosaunee/Great Council Fire conflict, the fur trade and adoption of European technologies.

If people wish to host 50 minute round table or panel discussions, or screen video productions appropriate to the Contact Period Champlain Basin; these proposals will be considered for inclusion. We have a grant to defray St. Michael's College's expenses, so we are hoping to not require a registration fee, or to hold it to a minimum.
