There are now just 10 days to the abstract deadline for this
year’s Goldschmidt Conference (March 1st).
2007 was a record year for Goldschmidt, but there have already been
more abstracts submitted for the Vancouver meeting that had arrived
at this stage last year. With Vancouver being one of the world's 10
most attractive cities, and being so convenient for Japanese and
Chinese delegates we expect a further record to be set this year.
Conference space at UBC is limited, and we would therefore strongly
recommend that delegates submit their abstracts before the start of
next week, if at all possible. Unlike previous recent Goldschmidt
conferences there are no plans to offer authors an extension to this
date.
It would also be worth booking accommodation (either at UBC or
downtown) as soon as possible, as Vancouver is exceptionally popular
in the summer.
Abstracts should be submitted online via the conference website [2]
and all authors should follow the preparation instructions [3] and
use the conference MS Word template [4] which can be downloaded from
the website and is also attached to this email.
There are over 120 sessions [5] dedicated to topics covering the
full range of geochemistry from the formation of planets to the
formation of mineral deposits, and from the origin of life to the
evidence for climate change. There are also 3 general sessions
covering broader geochemical topics.
Most of the world's leading geochemists are already signed up to be
in Vancouver: and more are added to the list each day. The current
list of keynotes and session convenors is appended at the bottom of
this message.
Funding has been provided by the GS, EAG, GSJ, MAC, NSF and ESF,
among others to allow for some financial assistance to be available
to students and geochemists from lower income countries. The
arrangements for applications are now being finalised, and details
will be sent out in a circular later this week and will be available
on the conference [6] and Geochemical Society [7] websites.
In addition to the scientific sessions of the conference, there is
an exciting range of field trips and short courses organised, as well
as a great social program. The conference will also have a substantial
job fair (as AGU does), this will be an opportunity to talk to both
industrial and academic employers; there will also be courses aimed
at helping young scientists, including a seminar run by NSF on how to
write a successful grant proposal. Again, details will be announced in
forthcoming circulars and available from the conference website.
This year’s Goldschmidt should be a truly excellent meeting. Do
plan to be part of it!
